Overview

The Senior Inventory Accountant is responsible for a wide range of accounting and reporting support as it relates to inventory transactions including balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close related duties, and other reporting as necessary. This position performs complex accounting activities and financial analyses, leads strategic projects, and presents recommendations to management. Although this position is generally subject to moderate direct supervision, a degree of creativity, latitude and independent problem-solving is expected. This position also acts as a resource to junior staff, providing training and mentoring as well as reviewing their routine work as directed.

 

Success in this role involves effectively participating in and leading various tactical and strategic accounting projects and initiatives. This includes business process improvements, improving efficiency with business processes and applications, and developing effective reporting and analysis. This position works with cross functional resources, builds and maintains relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, and continually seeks mechanisms to streamline and automate processes.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a wide range of month-end close related responsibilities for the inventory accounting team, ensuring timely and accurate month-end reporting.
  • Record required journal entries to maintain accuracy of assigned general ledger accounts and schedules.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet account reconciliations using best in class templates and techniques for audit support.
  • Prepare assigned monthly and quarterly financial reports ensuring accuracy and developing efficiency improvements.
  • Responsible for monthly, quarterly, and yearly inventory reserve analyses and true-ups.
  • Support the cycle of continuous improvement in process and controls.
  • Apply structured problem solving techniques to create robust, enduring process workflows as well as to develop and implement process improvements to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Develop a thorough comprehension of product cost flows for parts and truck/trailer inventory. Identify problems, establish facts, and present solutions.
  • Provide oversight to junior staff by reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, and reports. Train and guide staff on the topics of inventory accounting.
  • Research and answer inventory related inquiries including effectively communicating with sales and finance managers across the company.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and effectively communicate with management across the Company.
  • Provide excellent customer service to cross functional members of the TEC Team.
  • Maintain adequate knowledge of US GAAP and financial reporting aspects tied to specific inventory related balance sheet accounts.
  • Perform ad-hoc research and projects as needed. Rely on professional experience and judgement to assess risk and pursue accounting issues independently. Resolve or report to management as needed. Be able to write technical memos as needed.
  • Lead the physical inventory process, reconcile physical inventory versus the general ledger, investigate material variances, and present results to management.
  • Act as the subject matter expert in the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Be able to clearly express ideas, information, or concerns with the spoken word; present verbal information in a straightforward manner; ask questions in order to open channels of communication; listen to understand perspective of others.
  • Manage workload and proactively communicate with Management when there are unexpected challenges.
  • Analyze complex financial information and provide recommendations to Management on opportunities to improve inventory management, internal controls and reduce business risk.
  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail to ensure the accuracy of financial information.
  • Act as a key player in the annual audit by communicating with 3rd party auditors, preparing work-papers, and tying out financial statements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline.
  • Strong in-depth knowledge of US GAAP accounting principles.
  • Attention to detail while at the same time being able to understand big picture/overall strategy & business impacts.
  • Ability to utilize sound judgment in successfully managing ambiguous situations.
  • Ability to identify problems and opportunities and work cross-functionally to plan and implement creative solutions.
  • Strong oral and written communication with the ability to successfully interact with accounting, branch operations, and other internal and external partners.
  • Strong relationship building skills.
  • Highly driven and solutions focused.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills including the ability to be flexible and adapt to changes in priorities in ambiguous environment.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional fast paced environment.
  • Advanced skill with Microsoft Excel, including VLookups, Pivot Tables, and Power Queries.
  • Strong functional knowledge of industry specific ERP applications and functionalitypreferred.
  • Intermediate skill with Power Platform (Power BI) and MS Access preferred.
